Payment Processors or Payment Service Providers (PSP's) are the people who take the money from your customers and pay it to you, sometimes directly into your bank, other times you may need to request it be transfered to your bank. There is always a charge for this process either per transaction, monthly charge or a per transaction and % charge. Some companies will offer more than one type of plan but the important thing is that, as your business grows, one method may save you more in charges than another and you will need to decide when to switch. To use some of these services you may need a merchant account.
What is a Merchant Account?
Merchant accounts are similar to bank accounts except you dont have a bank card or cheque book, they are soley for credit card transactions, They work as a middle man. You use a PSP to take your money , someone like PROTX , they handle your customer credit cards and normally on a daily basis they process all the cards through your merchant account. This can be with companies like Streamline, or Barclays etc. You will be charged to process cards through your merchant account These charges are normally negotiable and can be reduced on a yearly basis or, if business increases, there may be a good case to get a better rate. Always play them off against each other.
Some companies will offer you a PSP and a merchant account. Some will find this a simpler method than others but you may find yourself restricted. Merchant accounts are normally compatible with various PSP's, not on a dedicated basis.
